Conclusion

This graph shows the flow in financial terms at a secondary school.

On the 4th August an underground burst occurred causing the flow to increase to a level costing £22 every hour. No one was on site, and no water was visible. The customer was notified and urgent investigations undertaken, resulting in the repair being completed just two days after the burst occurred. Unchecked, the additional flow would have cost £3,700 in just 1 week.

Across 72 sites a picture emerges of water losses across different public sector properties accounting for 36% of all consumption, or more than £3,000 per site on average.

In times of financial constraints, identifying and resolving such losses becomes ever more pressing. Once resolved, with continued monitoring, the savings will be completely sustainable. Demeter places great emphasis on ensuring that each site is checked every day, and it is this service that ensures the sustainability of the solutions.

Implementing the monitoring system costs little over 10% of the losses identified. Overall payback including investigations and repair works is around 6 months.

Daily Checking Service

A key part of the service we provide is to check each site every morning (including weekends and Bank Holidays) to ensure that any leaks or unwarranted increases in consumption are identified immediately.

Low minimum flow through the night at this office block until 20 May when ongoing flow increased to 116 litres every hour from 4 litres per hour. Customer notified on Saturday 21 May and problem resolved by maintenance personnel on 23rd May. Unchecked, the additional flow would have cost £160 per month

On occasions when this occurs, the customer is notified and able to respond promptly to resolve the problem. By providing this service, we can be confident that water consumption is controlled. Without a comprehensive monitoring system, the first time customers are aware of an issue is when a high water bill is received, by which time, hundreds or thousands of pounds can be lost.

Savings are measured through comparison of initial levels of consumption within those levels after installing a data logger and implementing the monitoring system.

The system explained

The system works through a logger attached to the water meter which measures the amount of water flowing through the meter every 15 minutes.

The graph shows the data displayed on the monitoring system from a primary school. The peaks represent consumption during the school day and the flat lines in between correspond to when the school is closed. The data shows that 132 litres of water per hour are still flowing through the meter overnight and at the weekend, indicating sizeable losses. In this case, 94% of water costs could be attributed to leakage despite no visible excess water above ground.
